I might be mistaken, but I was always under the impression that echinacea was something you took to boost your immune system before the onset of sickness. As soon as you feel the slightest tickle in your throat or an ache or a drippy nose, take some (with the other stuff you've mentioned) and that should do the trick... at least it has for me.
